North Coast Music Festival Review

After a long string of summer festivities with some of the best in the business playing, North Coast closed out the summer. The festival did not disappoint. North Coast Music Festival reigned in its return to Union Park in Chicago.

The spread of EDM, hip-hop, and jam bands was more prevalent than ever with some massive headliners. Odesza, Zedd, Bassnectar, and Grouplove were just some of the many artists I had the pleasure of seeing. The festival went three days over the long Labor Day weekend, with enough time to rest and recharge for Labor Day. 

New Changes to North Coast

One of the first things I noticed that changed since last year was the elimination of one  of the stages. This was a nice change, as the other stages were more packed and intense. One of the first times I ever hit up a Silent Disco was at North Coast. The once foreign experience was a welcome home to me. 

In the corner of the park was a popping place to get crazy under those yellow headphones. Shuffling on the streets ensued. The entrance into North Coast was seamless and everyone was in great spirits. There seemed to be more of a focus this year on more EDM acts. 

Festival's Founder Comments

Michael Berg, one of the festivals founders, said that this year was a record attendance. There were around 55,000 music fans spread out over the three days. 

It was interesting to hear some of his comments about the evolving EDM scene. Berg said, "The live side of it is the cooler, hipper side of it at this point. It's not just button pushing, which is what a lot of people negate the art form for."

That was true from some of the many live based electronic performances strewn throughout the venue. It's also a rising trend, we've been aware of and love! 

Stand out Acts from the Weekend 

Seeing Bassnectar in my home city was an incredible experience. His crowd brought out the best of the massive fan base. They danced until their hearts were filled with the light of the stage. He took everyone's minds on an expansive journey through his unique sound and wonder. 

Zedd also was incredible. Sharp sporadic lights cut from the stage like a barrage of lightning. The speed was incomprehensible at times, as he played hit after hit. For a festival at the end of the summer, everyone was still bringing their A-Game.

They don't call North Coast 'summers last stand' for nothing. Chicago's seven year old festival had something for everyone, and can count itself among one of the greatest city fests. Here's to next year North Coast!
