Andy C Talks Drum N Bass In iEDM Exclusive Interview
Drum N' Bass OG, owner and figurehead of Ram Records since 1992, and main stage headliner, Andy C, has been a staple in the dance scene since before most of you readers were born.
With countless closer sets at some of the worlds biggest and best festivals in the world like Glastonbury (where he performed for 85,000 people), and EDC Vegas under his belt, this British producer and businessman puts on a performance that is not to be missed.
Even in the midst of the chaos and excitement about the first day of a festival, Andy C was kind enough to sit down and chat with me before his set at Sziget Festival in Budapest, Hungary.
iEDM: You're at Sziget Festival in Budapest, how does it feel?
Andy C: Feels great! We just arrived, and it's day one of the festival! It looks incredible, man. I just looked in the tent and it's huge, and it's packed, and it's hot. I think it's going to go off, I'm looking forward to it.
iEDM: What can we expect from your performance tonight?
Andy C: Well, it's going to be DNB, it's gonna be a bit of everything from the DNB genre. I'm gonna see what the crowd's up for. We're gonna have a party and we're gonna raise the temperature, that's what we're going for.
iEDM: You've played at raves and festivals like EDC, Creamfields, and Tomorrowland. What is it like touring the world and performing with the best artists in the business?
Andy C: It's a very big privilege, a lucky place to be at. We're here today, the four of us, this is the first night of a four day weekend. We got the UK tomorrow and then Spain Saturday. It's a mental thing. When I first started out playing Drum N' Bass, I never would have dreamt it.
We were in an underground club in London for 13 weeks at the start of the year, so that kind of brought us back and grounded us. It took us back to the core. Then we get to fly around the world and see all the amazing places that are going of.
iEDM: What was the name of the club in London?
Andy C: XOYO London. We did 13 weeks straight every Friday and sold out every week.
iEDM: How are things going at Ram Records?
Andy C: Things are going great! There seems to be a release every 5 minutes. Busy busy busy. Even on the way here from the hotel I was sent two new tunes that are coming out on Ram. All of the artists are very busy. It's 25 years this year, so we are going in deep. We are doing remixes of old classics, we got a 25 year tour in the UK and Europe coming up in autumn. It's good times, wouldn't have it any other way.
iEDM: Your latest club track, "What Bass" just came out as your first release in almost a year, can we expect any more new music soon?
Andy C: Yeah it was the first release in a while, and I've got another tune that I've just finished and sent off. It's coming out very soon, it's got a release called diamond. It's coming out on Atlantic. After that, fingers crossed, there will be a vast flurry of tunes coming soon.
iEDM: DNB has kind of gone off on a tangent, how do you feel about this?
Andy C: People can make and take what they want from it. That's the beauty of it. I take an incredible amount of emotion and positivity from it. In my music I play all different styles of drum n bass. It's there for everybody. To me, once people hear it it never leaves. I hope that it will stay with.
iEDM: Is there anything else you'd like your fans to know?
Andy C: I can't say anything but love. It's been such an incredible ride, and I know tonights going to be something very special as always. We're gonna rock it out at Sziget, man!
I would like to give a huge thank you to Andy C and the good people at Sziget Festival for setting up this interview! Keep an eye out for more Artist Interviews HERE on iEDM.
