DJs Making A Difference In The World

| November 15, 2016

The EDM scene gets a pretty bad reputation. We rarely make headlines for anything positive which is a shame because the EDM community does so much. Every day artists are out there making a difference and raising money for organizations. There are organizations out there like AQUA that exist to change to the world but also make our concert experience that much better.

It's time to shine some light on some of the artists who are doing so much to change the world.

1. 3LAU:

3LAU is know for his ongoing work with the organization Pencils of Promise. After all of his hard work 3LAU then went on and started the first ever not-for-profit dance music label, Blume. Every single dollar from iTunes and Spotify streams are donated to the organization. Every million streams on Spotify equates to around $5,000, so just by listening to his music you’re making a difference.

All of the proceeds generated by the label and all of its future releases will be donated directly to Pencils of Promise. In the past, the money had been used to build a school in Guatemala. 3LAU makes it really easy for his fans to get involved and give back just by enjoying his music. Hopefully in the future other labels will follow his example and there will be other non-profit music labels.

2. Bassnectar:

Bassnectar has a very solid fan base and that’s putting it lightly. As one of the top dubstep producers out there it’s no wonder his ideas to raise money are such a success. Bassnectar started The Dollar Per Bass Head project with incredible success. Back in 2013, Lorin and his Bass Heads raised 100,000!

The project is a way for him and his fans to give back to the community to causes that matter to them. For every Bassnectar ticket sold, they collect $1 to donate. They don’t just donate to any charity though, the charities get voted on by the fans.

Lorin encourages fans to research each of the charities and vote for the ones that matter most to them. The money is then distributed to 5 charities. The organization that gets the most votes receives $20k, the 2nd receives $10k, and then the remaining top three get $5k each.

We all know you’re going to attend a Bassnectar show anyway, so it’s wonderful knowing that your good time will go to help make the world a better place.

3. Bingo Players:

Back in 2013, Peter Bäumer, tragically passed from cancer leaving the duo as a solo act. Maarten Hoogstraten decided to keep Peter’s memory alive by continuing on as the Bingo Players.

He recently started the Bingo Players 10 year anniversary tour. Hitting 11 different locations, every single dollar from pre-sale tickets will go towards cancer research. Bingo Players has teamed up with Fuck Cancer to help raise as much money as possible and make a difference.

4. Seven Lions:

Seven Lions is currently on his The Journey Tour. Throughout his tour he will also be raising money for Fuck Cancer. Joining the Bingo Players, $1 for every ticket sold will towards Fuck Cancer. In addition to this he also has a limited-edition t-shirt where the proceeds will go to benefiting Fuck Cancer.

5. Tigerlily:

Back in May, she was a victim of a leaked picture scandal. As we live in the technology age, this isn't an uncommon thing to happen. A picture of her naked was leaked on the internet. She then took to Instagram to speak out.

"I’ve spoken out many times against misogyny, sexism and online bullying, and in the past 24 hours I’ve seen just how vulgar and childish some people can be. Although the crime that has been committed is NOT OK, being proud of your body and who you are IS OK. Girls - Do not ever be ashamed of your body. Do not ever let anyone else ever treat you with anything but absolute respect. You and your body are completely perfect just the way you are and you all deserve to know that and be told that each and every day."

Instead of preaching body shame or hiding from the issue she spoke out about it. She brought attention to it and then donated $5,000 to a mental health charity. Tigerlily is the female role model in this industry we have been waiting for.

Positive Impact

Artists are out there changing the world and it's time they get the credit for it. They are providing a service to their fans while also letting the fans be a huge part of the contribution. It's time we shed some life on the positive and less of the negative. Keep on keepin' on guys, also save the bees!
