Giraffage Tells Us Why He Loves Boulder, Colorado in an iEDM Exclusive Interview

| November 07, 2017

Charlie Yin, better known by his stage name Giraffage is a Taiwanese-American electronic producer with a very unique sound from San Fransisco, California. After finishing up school at Berkeley, Yin decided to change career paths and make indescribable electronic music

Along with his latest EP, Giraffage has also just recently hit the road with special guest Sweater Beats for their Too Real Tour. With his upcoming back to back concerts in Colorado, I had to reach out and ask the man behind the music a few questions.

iEDM: You were recently signed to Counter Records, who is home to ODESZA, RAC, Daktyl, and countless other great artists, how has it been going over there so far?

Giraffage: It’s been great! They’ve been a great resource and it's so cool to be on a label with so many of my friends.

iEDM: Your latest EP Too Real just dropped today, and it's the first EP you've released for about 3 years. How would you say your style has evolved since your No Reason EP in 2014?

Giraffage: Yes, definitely. I went through a lot in that 2 year period, and I think that is reflected pretty well stylistically on my new album. I was listening to a lot of older bands and drawing influence from them. I think music was a lot more interesting harmonically in older music, so I tried to channel that into my new album.

iEDM: You're making a few stops in Colorado this November with Sweater Beats. What can the fans expect from the two of you?

Giraffage: I’m playing all originals, plus remixes for this tour, and I’m also bringing a pretty elaborate stage production. It’ll be a fun time :-)

iEDM: What is your favorite part about Boulder, Colorado?

Giraffage: One of my best friends lives around Boulder so I’m familiar with the area. I love just looking up and seeing huge mountains everywhere. Also just walking around downtown is cool and such a different vibe than any other city I’ve been in.

iEDM: You describe your genre as "Idk Idc whatever dude," but if you were to try to describe your music to someone that hasn't heard it before, what would you tell them?

Giraffage: I never know how to describe my own music, I usually just say the all encompassing “electronic music” genre. I feel like my sound constantly evolves, so I’m hesitant to box myself into a particular genre.

iEDM: There's a fair amount of R&B and pop influence in your mixes, if you could collaborate with any artist, big or small, to make a Giraffage original with, who would it be and why?

Giraffage: Probably Drake... or Sampha

iEDM: You graduated with a degree in political economics from Berkeley before the creation of Giraffage. What did you want to do for a living before you made the switch? And what made you make the switch?

Giraffage: I was going to go into marketing, but music was a much more appealing avenue for me to explore.

iEDM: Do you have anything else you'd like to say to your fans?

Giraffage: Thanks for listening and I love you!!!!!

After Giraffage ends his North American tour in December he will be crossing the pond to Europe to continue with his goal for global recognition.

Thank you to Giraffage and his management team for setting up this interview. Check out more Artist Interviews HERE on iEDM.
