[INTERVIEW] Joshwa Discusses New Tour, "More Money Girls" + More Ahead Of Under Construction Arizona: Chris Lake B2B FISHER

| June 16, 2022

Uncovered from the United Kingdom's underground dance scene and pushing the boundaries of his taste-breaking tech house discography is London-based "tech house technician", Joshwa. Making appearances on twelve record labels and counting such as Repopulate Mars, Sink or Swim, and Lovejuice, Joshwa continues to defy the limitations of tech house. iEDM had the opportunity to interview this tech house technician about his inspirations and upcoming collaborations prior to his performance at Under Construction: Chris Lake B2B FISHER

Read iEDM’s exclusive interview with Joshwa below.

iEDM: Arizona can’t hold their excitement for Under Construction, what can fans expect from your performance?

Joshwa: ENERGY!!! Lots of energy, grooves and unreleased riddims.

iEDM: You’ve released music under notable record labels such as Stashed, Cr2, and Spinnin' Deep. Why is it important for you to create a dynamic discography?

Joshwa: To create a journey for people on the dance floor. I like to play a lot of my own material in my sets, so it is important to have variety in the tracks I produce. It would be boring if it all sounded the same! I try to push boundaries when producing and I think this has shown on my recent releases.

iEDM: Can you tell me about the inspiration or creative process behind your latest single, “More Money Girls”? Also, if you were to create a music video for this single, what imagery or storyline would you like to include?

Joshwa: I used to listen to UK grime as a kid all the time, so I wanted to produce a tune with influence from this scene. In terms of a music video, it would obviously have to be wheelbarrows full of cash with lots of women running around haha.

iEDM: What are the biggest inspirations to your signature sound?

Joshwa: Tough question. I’d say my sound has originated from a variety of inspirations such as 90s dance, rap/hip-hop, world music. I can’t pinpoint what it is exactly, but I listen to a lot of music from a lot of genres in my downtime to keep inspired and keep things interesting in my productions.

iEDM: Can you describe the first track/ID you produced: How old were you? What equipment did you use? What was the title?

Joshwa: I was nine, at primary school, and was messing about on the computers during IT class. I produced an absolute heater on Dance Ejay 4 using all their pre-built loops (I promise it was sick lol). I can’t remember the name, but it slapped at the time haha. After that, I got the bug for it and moved onto Reason then into Ableton.

iEDM: Can you name a track you produced that holds sentimental value to you and why?

Joshwa: "Party's Jumpin" as this really got my career moving in the Unites States. Seeing tastemakers play this all over the world at events was a big moment for me.

iEDM: What has been your favorite moment while on tour this year? List some of your tour essentials.

Joshwa: Getting shouted at and chased by a man dressed as Elvis on a mobility scooter in Vegas was a highlight. Tour essentials: tequila, contact lenses (as I’m blind), and multivitamins. It’s all about balance.

iEDM: Can you describe the feelings or emotions you experience before and after a performance?

Joshwa: Euphoria. The feeling of playing to crowds who know and love your music is second to none.

iEDM: What would you like to accomplish next in 2022?

Joshwa: EVERYTHING!!! Shows, shows, and more shows to get my music out there to as many people as possible.

iEDM: Are you at liberty to share any details about upcoming releases, collaborations, and tour appearances?

Joshwa: I have a tour in Australia and New Zealand beginning in July which I’m super excited about. I have a big upcoming track with Sammy Porter on Fishers label, Catch and Release soon and a big collab on Insomniac coming out soon too. There’s lots going on, but that’s all I can share for now!
