The Glitch Mob Talks New Album And Stage Sets In iEDM Exclusive Interview

If you've attended their performances, you know why it's a must see! iEDM even named The Glitch Mob as #1 Set To See At Bonnaroo 2018 in a previous article. The group was formed in 2006 and has shot their way to the top, keeping the attention of music lovers with their glitchy sounds and amazing performances.

The trio, Boreta, Ooah, and edIT met through the music scene and decided to perform together one day. That's when they found their energies all matched up and playing together was actually more fun. They got addicted to the feeling of being on stage together and have been unstoppable ever since. 

From collaborating on laptops to introducing The Blade in 2014, a musical component designed by movie set designers, highlighting the energy of multiple people collaborating has been the core of their project. Now they operate with the updated version, The Blade 2.0 which is also tilted to the crowd to show exactly what it is that they are doing during a set. Next to the trio's perfect collaboration, their props put the crowd in awe every time. When you see these guys on the lineup, you're in for a treat.

Not only has The Glitch Mob been blowing the minds of masses around the world, they just released a highly anticipated album, See Without Eyes. In this album, we see features from artists like Elohim, Aram, and Tula. The beautifully curated album shows the evolution of their music while keeping the glitchy vibes we love them for.

This globally renowned trio also just launch a virtual reality experience for their new album. Their collaboration with TheWaveVR & StrangeLoop aired live via TheWaveVR’s Facebook page, where nearly 8,000 people tuned in to watch the experience unfold for the first time. The show is free for all Oculus Rift and HTC Vive VR headset owners. It’s available globally through TheWaveVR’s app, the Oculus Store and Steam, and on TheWaveVR’s Facebook page.

Now fans can immerse themselves in a multi-sensory experience accompanied by The Glitch Mob’s pulsating soundscapes and even have the option to interact with other users tuning in from all over the world.

We were able to catch up with them at Bonnaroo just before their second year performing at the festival to chat about all of their developments. We asked who the creative geniuses behind the stage sets are. 

"All of us contribute ideas and it's part of a long process," Boreta said. "We all started off as DJs collaborating on laptops. Then, at some point, we started taking these touchscreen controllers and pointing them towards the audience because we wanted to get people more involved with what we were doing. They're called Lemurs but were like an iPad. That kept progressing, then we came in contact with the show designer, Martin Phillip. He's a brilliant guy and his canvas is the stage. Collaborating with him, he took our idea to the next level."

Oooah said that their inspirations for the set design come from many different places including punk rock, Japanese Taiko drumming, space, futuristic ideas, 80's vibe, and badassery in general. The instruments used in the performances are the Dell Canvas touchscreen, Alienware and Dell computers, V-Drums, and Takai MPD 224's.

edIT told iEDM, "We've been performing like this for some time because there has always been a disillusion, like even way back in the day, that if someone is up there performing on a laptop you can't really know what they are actually up there doing. Maybe they're just checking their internet. So, that's something we've always wanted to dispel. That's why we've always titled our controllers to the crowd. We play as much stuff live as three people with six hands can."

The movie-like experience they fully immerse their audience into on main stage doesn't stop them from raging late night get downs with their laptops though. Just a night before the guys got "super wacky" for an after party in the Bonnaroo campgrounds.

iEDM asked, "What would you say it takes to be a successful trio?"

"At the end of the day, I think success for us really just means being happy and getting joy from putting smiles on people's faces from the music we write. If we've touched somebody with our music in a positive way, that's what makes us feel like we've done it," said edIT.

Boreta told us, "collaboration is compromising. That's the nature of it. If you have an idea that you think is good, but the other two don't like it, then it changes into something else. The collaboration is really about trust too. If you have two other people signing off on an idea, you know it's going to be good. We have a very strict quality control meter."

When the crew hits the studio, they don't try to stick to a certain genre, and in turn, have created their own. Their unique sounds resonate with many, and fans have been waiting for sometimes on a new album. See Without Eyes can be found across platforms such as SoundCloud, Spotify, and more. The title means it's more about feeling than seeing. It carries with it the unique sounds that The Glitch Mob has always had but evolved.

"The music speaks for itself," said Ooah. "Our job is more to get out of the way and let the music inspire. Music does what it wants. Our task is to smash our ego and become shepherds of it."

The Glitch Mob has a big tour coming in the fall, throughout the United States and headed back to Europe. Stay tuned, as they are also working on new music and remixes.
