Aspire For PLUR, Not Instagram Likes

| June 09, 2017

PLUR means everything in the world to me. It has become the guideline by which I live my life and I try to conduct myself with peace, love, unity, respect and responsibility, both in and out of the rave scene. PLUR has changed my life for the better and it’s something that I know I will carry with me for the rest of my life. That being said, one of my favorite things about the rave scene is the community and the PLUR. But some people say that PLUR is vanishing. And that’s really sad.

PLUR dates back to the 90’s and is credited to New York DJ Frankie Bones. According to anecdotes, while Bones was playing at a warehouse rave, a fight broke out. Bones wasn’t having it, and supposedly he got on the microphone and yelled: “if you don’t start showing some peace, love, and unity, I’ll break your faces.” Suffice to say, the fight broke up. But the concept of PLUR had taken root and over the years, PLUR and rave culture have become practically synonymous.

Fast forward 25 years (give or take) and PLUR is still present in our lives, but has it been diminishing? Some old-school ravers that I’ve talked to have told me the same thing: raves aren’t the same anymore. Ravers aren't the same anymore. The value system that we have held so near and dear to our hearts has shifted. We care more about social media than PLUR.

With social media like Facebook and Instagram, it becomes easy to exist in a very self-centered existence. We want to have the best (documented) time at a show, we want to have good memories and have the best night of our lives. Understandable.

But this solipsism clashes with PLUR. When people are so determined to get that perfect Instagram picture or snap the drop in exactly the right spot, they don’t mind stepping on some toes or pushing through the crowd to get that #ravepic. But don’t do that. We are all here because we love the music, we love the community and we love our rave family. Family treats each other with peace, love, unity and respect. And when we become so self-centered and focused on ourselves, we forget to treat our family with kindness and respect. Perpetuate PLUR, even if it means sacrificing that Instagram picture or addition to your snap story.

We all gather together to celebrate our love for this scene. We truly love this music and we love our community. Treat each other the way you want to be treated. Ravers are all one family, and we should treat each other like family. Don’t let PLUR die, perpetuate peace, love, unity and respect both on and off festival grounds. We all represent the beauty that is the EDM community and we want to represent it in the best way possible.

Demonstrate your PLUR with rave outfits that will show your rave family how much you love the music. Our Music Collection allows you to wear your heart on your sleeve.
