Grammys 2018: Here Are iEDM's Dance Music Awards Predictions

| January 18, 2018

Music's biggest night is less than two weeks away.

On Sun., Jan 28, recording artists from around the world will come to Madison Square Garden to see which nominees will take home the infamous gramophone trophy and to watch unforgettable performances from our favorite stars.

The 60th annual Grammy Awards are here to celebrate our favorite artists. James Corden will be hosting the event and looking back at 60 years of music from The Recording Academy.

This year, we can expect performances from Lady Gaga, Pink, Childish Gambino, to name a few, and an extra special collaboration from Elton John and Miley Cyrus.

There Are Only 2 Categories For Dance Music

They will award categories like Song Of The Year, Album Of The Year, and Best New Artist. They also get more genre specific and go into Best Rock Albums, Hip Hop Track of the Year, etc.

The Grammys didn't start recognizing the EDM spectrum until more recent years. Some Academy members were reluctant to give dance music its own category because they were not sure that it was a genre that would stick around.

In 1998, they began awarding Best Dance Recording which has seen winners like Madonna, Britney Spears, Zedd, and most recently The Chainsmokers.

Finally in 2005 they began recognizing the Best Dance/Electronic Album. Here we are 13 years later having seen winners like Daft Punk, Skrillex, Jack U and most recently Flume.

To be defined as dance music, albums must contain at least 51% playing time of new vocal or instrumental electronic recordings.

Every year, I like to share my EDM nominee Grammy predictions.

Here are the 2018 nominees:

Best Dance Recording

Bambro Koyo Ganda - Bonobo Featuring Innov Gnawa Bonobo, producer; Bonobo, mixer

Cola - CamelPhat & Elderbrook CamelPhat & Elderbrook, producers; CamelPhat, mixer

Andromeda - Gorillaz Featuring DRAM Damon Albarn, Jamie Hewlett, Remi Kabaka & Anthony Khan, producers; Stephen Sedgwick, mixer

Tonite - LCD Soundsystem James Murphy, producer; James Murphy, mixer

• Line Of Sight - ODESZA Featuring WYNNE & Mansionair Clayton Knight & Harrison Mills, producers; Eric J Dubowsky, mixer

Best Dance/Electronic Album

Migration - Bonobo

3-D The Catalogue - Kraftwerk

Mura Masa - Mura Masa

A Moment Apart - ODESZA

What Now - Sylvan Esso

My Pick: Odesza for both Best Dance Recording and Best Dance Album.

This is a no brainer. There's a reason this duo from Seattle has sold out their worldwide A Moment Apart Tour. Their chillwave, indietronica style redefined dance music and created new genres that artists such as Big Wild has credited for inspiration

A Moment Apart reached #3 on the Billboard Top 200 and #1 on the Top Electronic/Dance Albums Chart.

Their music and beautiful and uplifting. It's melodic but also has layers of future bass with addicting vocals.

Their second album, In Return, that was released in 2014 is still one of my favorite albums to date, and I still listen to it regularly.

The 60th annual Grammys air on CBS on Sunday, January 28th. Tune in and see who actually takes home the most recognized award in the music industry.

I'm sure we'll see deserving winners like Taylor Swift, Ed Shereen and Bruno Mars. Check out the full list of nominees HERE
