[LISTEN] SoDown Blends Vintage Soul and Modern Bass on ‘Scenes of Consciousness’
SoDown continues expanding the boundaries of his bass-driven sound with the release of Scenes of Consciousness, an album built around the concept of life unfolding like a film. Drawing from decades of musical history, classic cinema, and vintage recordings, the project reinterprets familiar sounds through the Colorado producer’s distinctive fusion of dubstep, funk, jazz, and soul.
Rather than using samples simply as recognizable moments, SoDown incorporates them into an overarching narrative about consciousness, nostalgia, and the importance of living in the present.
The album moves fluidly between styles, opening with the cinematic piano melodies and spoken-word passages of “Consciousness” alongside the sound of an old film projector that immediately establishes the record’s visual framing.
“Who Knows” then transports the album into a retro jazz-club atmosphere, centering a vocal sampled from Marion Black’s 1970 recording of the same name within a groove-heavy dubstep production.
“Gold (Can’t Hold Me Down)” offers one of the clearest examples of SoDown’s sample-driven approach, bringing together references to Ray Charles, N.W.A., West Coast hip-hop duo Low Profile, and Austin Powers in Goldmember within a funky, bass-heavy arrangement.
Meanwhile, “In The Night” draws from the nostalgic atmosphere of classic doo-wop and reframes that influence through an energetic bass house production.
Elsewhere, SoDown uses collaborations to explore different corners of his sound. AHEE joins him on “Hit The Rhythm,” which begins with the romantic atmosphere of an old black-and-white film before shifting into aggressive bass house.
“H U M A N” with Shlump draws from 2001: A Space Odyssey, pairing science-fiction nostalgia with warped bass textures and interstellar sound design.
“Wanna GetDown” with Capochino embraces a darker, heavier approach while maintaining the piano and jazz influences running throughout the album.
The project’s more emotional moments arrive through collaborations with Steller and WonkyWilla. “Enjoy The Ride (Stay Present)” centers on remaining grounded in the present moment, allowing its message to guide the track’s atmospheric production.
“Won’t You Love” explores love and connection through a blend of hip-hop, funk, and dubstep, incorporating one of the album’s standout saxophone passages before transitioning into a heavier second drop.
The closing “Shout It Out (Too Bad You’re Gone)” pulls the intensity back, ending the record with reflective vocals and a sense of cinematic resolution.
“At its core, it’s also about learning to step outside the constant stream of thought, witness life as it unfolds, and find more presence in the moment we’re actually living,” SoDown shares when discussing the inspiration behind the album.
Beyond the studio, SoDown is currently bringing the project to audiences across North America on his 25-date “Scenes of Consciousness” Tour.
The run concludes February 13, 2027, at Denver’s Mission Ballroom with “The SoDown Picture Show,” a special hometown performance featuring live instrumentation, visual storytelling, and a full marching band.

Ultimately, Scenes of Consciousness reflects SoDown’s ability to connect seemingly distant musical influences within a singular artistic vision.
By combining the familiarity of classic recordings with contemporary bass production and a more introspective narrative, he creates an album that celebrates the past without losing sight of the present.
