10. Avicii's Death
Earlier this year we’ve lost a beautiful soul from dance music. The creator of major dance music classics such as “Levels” and “Wake Me Up,” pioneer dance music artist Avicii passed away over an overdose on April 20 of 2018. The loss of Avicii was definitely a wake up call for the dance music scene that brought up discussion in the rave community about mental health and drug use. EDM won’t be the same without you Tim. Avicii’s memory will live on forever.
9. Deadmau5 insults Slushii Online
We find out the news instantly through social media feed. Tension sprung up between Deadmau5 and Slushii when Deadmau5 commented on Slushii recently posted music on Soundcloud; calling Slushii's music “Autistic,” when Slushii does happed to fall in the spectrum of autism. DeadMau5 follows up with an apology along with stating he is seeking help for his anger issue. Slushii states his disappointment in Deadmau5 and states that Deadmau5 was once his idol.
8. Hannah Wants Opens Up About Physical Health
While on tour, UK house producer Hannah Wants was diagnosed with breast cancer. The DJ opened up to her fans and the media about her diagnosis 18 months after she received the news. She also notes that she believes it may have been the stress that the industry has pushed on her since the tour and basic DJ life. Hannah soon followed the launch of her label “Etiquette.”
7. Ultra Miami Relocates for 2019
Ultra Miami, one of the largest EDM festivals in Florida, will no longer be hosted at its original venue. Word states that the relocation is due to the city denying the festival to be launched at the original location due to traffic and transportation issues, environmental impact, and land issues. Most recent news stated that Ultra will now be hosted at the Virginia Key 10. Nothing can spot this party from happening. Who will we see at Ultra?
6. Fisher Gets Shout Out by Elon Musk
The continues efforts of Fisher doesn’t just stop with his sold out shows and hit single ‘Losing It,” as well as maintaining the spotlight on numerous playlist by Spotify and Apple Music. The man on everyone's radar caught the attention of many including Elon Musk. Musk tweeted Fishers track on his Twitter account and gave him a shoutout.
5. 1788-L Insane Blow Up
If you haven't heard of this rising star in 2018, then you have certainly been under a rock. From early collaborations with artists like Rezz and Illenium to launching official remixes for RL Grime and The Glitch Mob, this rising went from bedroom producing to the stage to support acts like Ekali to headlining festivals like OMFG NYE. 1788-L is the new retrosound you don’t want to miss.
4. Return of Swedish House Mafia at Ultra 2018
Ultra had a little surprise for fans inner EDM child. Swedish House Mafia made their debut return performance at Ultra 2018. The trio reunited for one night Ultra weekend to bring back what their fans thought they would never see again. Heaven sure did have a plan for us.
3. Gesaffelstein is Back
Gesaffelstein launches his big return with a signing to major label Columbia Records. Fun fact, this producer has worked with big names like Lana Del Rey, The Weeknd, Kanye, and more. The French techno producer is back but where will we see him next ? Catch the mystery man making moves in 2019.
2. End of Datsik's Career
Although dubstep has really made a come up in 2019, the heavy hitting genre lost legend along the way. In March, 2018, accusations were made against Datsik of sexual assault towards his fans he brought backstage. Datsik was soon dropped from his management, agency, and label. Will we ever see Datsik again?
1. Shaq @ Lost Lands
If you attended Lost lands, Ohio, you must’ve caught the most surprising set of the year. Shaquille O’ Neal, also known as DJ Diesel, appeared for a surprise at Lost Lands dropping filthy tracks by artist like Herobust, Dack Janiels, Barely Alive and so much more. The tallest EDM DJ will also be performing at Decadence Arizona alongside acts like NGHTMRE, Alison Wonderland, Skrillex, and more.
