Gov Ball Announces Eclectic 2018 Lineup
To anyone outside of the EDM sphere, the phrase "music festival" tends to translate to EDM powerhouses like Ultra Miami and EDC Las Vegas. But believe it or not, many music festivals are not EDM-centric, and cover a wide variety of genres (with EDM sprinkled in, of course).
As a whole, an exclusively electronic music festival would be billed as such. While I live under an EDM umbrella (I don't know one of Cardi B's songs, I think she's a rapper?) and cannot name any of the top 10 songs on the radio, however I do think that attending other music festivals besides exclusively electronic ones, is a good idea.
Festivals like Bonnaroo, Okeechobee, Coachella and others feature electronic acts, but they also have a number of names on the lineup that make me say "who's that?" And I love it.
Governor's Ball in New York is known for bringing a hip-hop and R&B heavy lineup to Randalls Island in the summer, and Gov Ball just dropped its stacked 2018 lineup.
Eminem (who coincidentally is also performing at Coachella, Bonnaroo, Firefly, Boston Calling and others) is one of the headliners of Gov Ball, along with Jack White, Travis Scott and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
On the EDM end of the spectrum, ravers will see Diplo and Galantis. Seeing as Gov Ball is neither billed as nor promoted as an EDM festival, the appearances of EDM collaborators Khalid, Halsey, Lil Uzi Vert, Post Malone, Goldlink, Flight Facilities and Quin XCII make for an eclectic lineup.
Other big news for the festival is the debut performance of the new project Silk City, a collaboration between Diplo and Mark Ronson. What will this sound like? No idea, but Gov Ball will be the debut performance of the two producers. Diplo hinted at a disco album (?!) in a GQ interview which you can read HERE.
Gov Ball will bring hip hop, trap and rap to Randall's Island this summer in June. If you love hip hop, want to branch out, or simply love music festivals, Gov Ball will be an interesting experience for all involved.
While I personally associate Randall's Island with Electric Zoo (Labor Day Weekend in September!) we'll see what Gov Ball brings to the city of hip hop.
