Rave essentials are the small items that decide whether a festival day feels great or miserable. Ear protection, sun cover, a gate legal bag, glow ready layers and a hygiene kit make up the core. A good kit is compact, legal at your specific event, and packed days before you travel.

Glow Rules Split by Festival

Festivals disagree most on light up gear. EDC Las Vegas allows glowsticks, glowing costumes and jewelry, LED poi, orbitals and LED hula hoops. You can bring a totem there too, up to 10 feet and made from lightweight material.

Ultra Music Festival goes the other way and bans glow sticks, totems and loose glitter. Illuminated jewelry and costumes are still fine at Ultra. That's why UV reactive prints and glowing wearables travel better than props.

Check your own event's list before you buy anything. A banned item just ends up in a bin at the gate.

Rave Bags: What Actually Gets Through the Gate

Bag rules are where a lot of people lose gear at entry. Our drawstring festival bags come in one size, and so do our rave backpacks.

Whether either one gets in depends on your festival, so check the bag rules first. Backpacks are banned at Ultra Music Festival, which admits only clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bags up to 13 by 17 inches.

Ultra vs EDC Bag Size Limits

Two of the biggest US events publish very different numbers:

• Ultra Music Festival: clear bags up to 13 by 17 inches, hand sized clutches and one gallon zip top bags. Fanny packs are allowed and backpacks are banned. Hydration packs are fine as long as they aren't backpacks, and they must be empty on entry
• EDC Las Vegas: clear bags up to 12 by 6 by 12 inches, and non clear clutches up to 6 by 9 inches. Non clear hydration packs can have two main compartments and one smaller one at most, and they must be empty on entry
• Both run a thorough TSA style search, where you empty your pockets and bags and get a pat down. At EDC you may also have to take off your shoes

We don't carry fanny packs or hydration packs right now, so pick those up from another retailer. Use our drawstring bags for smaller loads where your festival allows them.

Hearing Protection: The Essential iEDM Does Not Sell

Earplugs belong at the top of any rave essentials list, so pick up a pair before you go. According to the NIDCD, long or repeated exposure at or above 85 dBA can cause hearing loss. Concerts run between 94 and 110 dBA, well past that level.

OSHA's workplace limit is 90 dBA over an eight hour day. It also says noise induced hearing loss can't be fixed with surgery or medicine. A weekend of main stage sets adds up fast.

The good news is that the NIDCD calls noise induced hearing loss the only kind you can fully prevent. Earplugs are the protection it recommends. Ultra lists earplugs as an allowed item, so bring a pair in with you.

Sun, Heat and Weather Protection

Daytime sets are rough on anyone who skips sun protection. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Put it on about 15 minutes before you head out, using roughly 1 ounce, about a shot glass full.

No sunscreen is waterproof, according to the FDA. A water resistant label only covers 40 or 80 minutes of swimming or sweating. Reapply at least every two hours either way.

Buy lotion, not spray. Aerosol cans are prohibited at EDC Las Vegas. Ultra only accepts sunscreen that is non aerosol and sealed when you walk in.

Only broad spectrum sunscreens with SPF 15 or higher can claim to lower skin cancer and early skin aging risk. Add an SPF 30 lip balm, which the AAD also recommends.

Hats, Sunglasses and Goggles

A hat gives you shade on top of your sunscreen, and Ultra allows both hats and sunglasses.

Hydration Habits That Beat the Heat

OSHA's heat advice is simple: don't wait until you feel thirsty to drink. At a festival, that means sipping water on a schedule.

Carry a refillable bottle. EDC requires reusable bottles and hydration packs to be empty at the gate.

Bandanas and Face Coverings

Dust, sun and sweat are all good reasons to bring a face covering. Rave bandanas are our largest accessory category, so you'll have plenty of designs to pick from.

Each bandana is one size, made from 100% polyester with an all over print. For more coverage, go with our rave bandana masks and neck gaiters.

We also carry a smaller range of cloth face masks. Our PM 2.5 cloth mask comes with four slide in carbon inserts, and each filter lasts one to four days. It also includes a metal nose piece.

Ultra bans face masks except medical masks worn for safety. Staff may also ask you to remove one for ID checks. Pick a bandana mask for dust and style, but it may not make it past the gate at Ultra.

Comfort, Hygiene and Camping Extras

Multi day events need a ground layer and a clean up plan. Blankets in our festival camping collection run from 50 by 60 up to 68 by 80. Our beach throws double as that ground layer, and they're cold machine wash only.

Pack your own hygiene kit as well. Wipes, sanitizer, blister plasters and spare socks make a big difference by day three. Recovery matters too, and our post festival recovery guide covers the days after.

If you're heading to EDC Las Vegas, leave all over the counter medication at home, because EDC bans it. Better to plan around that rule now than find out in the search line.
